Sharing the skills to make medicines

Thai pharmacist Krisana Kraisintu joined Thailand’s Government Pharmaceutical Organization in 1983 and led its research and development work. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation records her formulation of a generic version of the HIV medicine zidovudine (AZT) in 1995 and her team’s subsequent work on the combination medicine GPO-VIR. From 2002, Kraisintu worked in Africa, helping set up a pharmaceutical facility in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and improve a plant in Tanzania. UCLA’s 2005 event profile also describes her support for local production. She received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2009. UCLA Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation
Our editorial focus is the manufacturing knowledge she helped leave with local teams. Improving access depends on both affordability and the capacity to make medicines reliably. Number 98 is the order in the M31 series.
