Thai-developed 'AI Carbon Auditor' Selected as Core Infrastructure for World Bank Low Carbon City Project

The Fund Management Unit for Enhancing Competitiveness (BPK) under the Research and Innovation Promotion Office (RWP) has advanced the success of its research funding initiative by supporting the development of 'Digital MRV,' also known as the 'AI Carbon Auditor.' This automated system for tracking, reporting, and verifying carbon credits was developed by Wakeen (Thailand) Co., Ltd. with Dr. Sak Yong Pathanwakin leading the project. Following recognition at the IMF-World Bank 2026 conference as a national digital data platform enhancing transparency in the carbon credit market, the system has gained international acceptance. It is now being used as the primary infrastructure for the World Bank's Low Carbon City project, implemented in collaboration with EXIM Bank and Krungthai Bank (KTB). The technology addresses key challenges in the Thai carbon credit market, such as high verification costs, long approval times, and data reliability issues associated with traditional manual fieldwork. By utilizing IoT sensors, cloud computing, and AI for continuous data collection and processing from the source, Digital MRV reduces manual labor and enables traceability. The platform features blockchain stamping for data integrity, three-level AI cross-checks for accuracy, and VPN-based cybersecurity to prevent greenwashing. Developed over nearly three years with BPK funding, the system has outcompeted foreign alternatives and is being expanded to neighboring countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, and India. Future plans include adapting the system to support Climate Finance mechanisms where carbon credits can offset interest rates to assist businesses in transitioning to sustainability.
