MTEC Advances Vehicle Safety, Rail Materials, and Sustainable Aviation Fuels

Key summary

The Thailand Machine Engineering Center (MTEC) has developed technologies and standards to enhance transportation safety, infrastructure maintenance, and environmental sustainability in Thailand. In vehicle safety, MTEC applied material selection, computer simulation, and prototype testing to improve crashworthiness for ambulances, school bus conversions, and large passenger vehicles, including a prototype rear-impact energy absorber made from recycled beverage cans. Collaborating with the Land Transport Department, MTEC established design standards and draft regulations aligned with international norms, developed motorcycle helmet evaluation criteria, and created prototypes for drowsy-driving detection systems that analyze driver behavior to mitigate accident risks. For rail systems, MTEC utilized powder metallurgy and composite materials to manufacture train components locally, reducing imports and boosting domestic production capabilities. The center also supports damage analysis of rails and train wheels/axles, working with the State Railway of Thailand to develop operation manuals for systematic inspection, damage prevention, and maintenance planning. Additionally, MTEC partnered with industry associations to establish sustainability criteria for raw materials used in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, verifying domestic material sustainability and preparing operators for entry into the low-carbon aviation supply chain.
