What Does “Normal Sweetness = 50%” Mean in a Thai Cafe?

Reading Thailand’s 50% sweetness initiative—and asking clearer questions at the counter

“Regular sweetness, please” is a convenient order, but it does not ensure that the customer and the barista have the same taste in mind. For someone seeking a less sweet drink, and for a cafe trying to make repeat orders consistent, the useful starting point is a shared reference.

What the official announcement says

Thailand’s Department of Health, under the Ministry of Public Health, announced a “normal sweetness = 50%” initiative involving nine brands on 11 February 2026. This column revisits that announcement; it does not report a new launch today. Department of Health announcement

Ask what the percentage refers to

The following is our editorial interpretation. That announcement alone does not establish an identical quantity of sugar in an identical cup across every cafe. Nor should a percentage on an ordering screen be read as sugar’s share of the drink’s total weight. Ask the shop what its reference is.

At an unfamiliar cafe, begin with: “Which sweetness level is the default for this drink?” After choosing a level, ask whether ingredients other than syrup are already sweetened. No added syrup and no sugars in any ingredient are different descriptions. The contents of a particular product require its actual recipe and labelling to be checked.

A useful order is brief and repeatable

State the drink, cup size and desired sweetness together. Check that the order record reflects the selection. When moving to another branch or another drink, avoid assuming that the previous setting necessarily produces the same result. If the taste differs from what you expected, remember the selection so that you can explain the change you want next time. This is an ordering method proposed by our editors, not a way of measuring nutrient content.

For cafe owners, consistency needs a working definition

We suggest documenting the base recipe alongside the customer’s options. The reference for each cup size, treatment of extra ingredients and staff explanation should agree. If delivery orders and counter orders have different defaults, make that visible before the purchase.

Before using the initiative’s language in promotion, establish what the shop actually prepares. Without checking participation or ingredients, there is no basis here to claim official certification for an entire business. This column is neither an inspection of particular cafes nor a promise of health outcomes.

The everyday business opportunity is to make a small question easy to answer. A shared meaning for “regular” helps customers explain their preference and staff explain what they serve.
